The town has a population of around 7,000, most are in farming and fishery businesses.
In 1993, a fire broke out and burnt down 17 houses. Soon after, a fire station was elected.
Unfortunately, another fire hit the town again in 1995, this time destroyed the one and only independent Chinese high school.
Rengit has since recovered and been rebuilt.
